Architecture and Key Features
Go-Based TUI
Unlike Python-based tools (Aider) or Node.js CLIs (Claude Code), OpenCode is written in Go. This gives it fast startup time, a single binary distribution, and low memory overhead. The TUI renders in your terminal with split panes — chat on one side, file diffs and tool output on the other.

What OpenCode Does Well
1. No subscription, genuine model choice
This is the headline advantage. Claude Code locks you to Anthropic's API at whatever price they set. Cursor manages model access on their end. OpenCode lets you route to DeepSeek V3 at $0.001 per task, switch to Gemini 2.5 Pro for better reasoning tasks, or use a local Ollama model when privacy matters. When a provider cuts prices or a new model outperforms, you switch the same day.
2. LSP-powered code understanding
Most AI coding tools operate on file text. OpenCode can query the language server for actual type information, function signatures, and cross-file references. In our TypeScript testing, this reduced hallucinated method names by a noticeable margin on tasks involving complex interfaces. For Python, go-to-definition worked reliably across virtual environment packages. It is not perfect, but it is a real improvement over pure text context.
3. TUI is genuinely usable
The terminal interface renders diffs inline, shows tool call progress, and lets you navigate the session without scrolling through walls of text. Developers who spend most of their time in the terminal will find this more ergonomic than Claude Code's plain output. The Go binary starts in under a second; there is no extension loading lag.
4. Remote Docker execution

Honest Limitations
1. Anthropic blocked consumer OAuth tokens
This is the most significant recent development. On January 9, 2026, Anthropic blocked OpenCode from using the consumer OAuth tokens that Claude Code relies on. Previously, OpenCode users could authenticate with their Claude.ai Pro subscription ($20/month) and essentially get Claude API access for free. That no longer works.

2. No Esc-to-rewind (no session history rollback)
Claude Code has a genuinely useful feature: pressing Escape mid-session can rewind to a previous state. If the agent goes off course, you can roll back without manually undoing changes. OpenCode does not have this. You can use git to revert changes, but there is no native session rollback. For agentic workflows where the tool runs multiple tool calls autonomously, this is a real gap.
3. Setup requires real configuration effort
Installing OpenCode, configuring API keys, setting up LSP servers for your languages, and testing the client/server setup takes more time than installing Claude Code (which is a single npm install -g @anthropic-ai/claude-code). For developers who want to be coding within five minutes, OpenCode is not that tool. The payoff is flexibility; the cost is setup overhead.
4. Quality varies significantly by model
