What Is a Karpathy LLM Knowledge Base?
On April 3, 2026, Andrej Karpathy (ex-Tesla AI, founding member of OpenAI) published a pattern he called LLM Knowledge Bases: a personal knowledge asset built as plain markdown files, maintained by an LLM instead of a human, and queried through Claude Code or Obsidian instead of a RAG pipeline.
The insight is simple but load-bearing: traditional "second brain" systems (Notion templates, Roam Research, zettelkasten) decay within six months because the human can't keep up with linking, tagging, and reconciling. Karpathy's pattern moves all of that work to the LLM. The human feeds raw material; the LLM compiles, cross-links, and flags contradictions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need Obsidian to use it?+
No. The vault is plain markdown files — readable in any text editor. Obsidian gives you the best visual experience (wiki-link navigation, graph view, custom CSS themes), but you can also use VS Code, a markdown previewer, or just cat the files from a terminal.
Do I need Claude Code?+
Recommended but optional. The vault works as a plain wiki you read yourself. Claude Code is the best LLM interface because it auto-reads CLAUDE.md, handles long context well, and can execute multi-file updates in one command. Codex and similar agents work too, but require more manual setup.
How fresh is the content?+
The v1 edition is a snapshot dated April 2026. Google algorithms and AI search platforms change quickly, so treat it as a point-in-time reference, not a live feed. A v2 edition is planned for October 2026 with six months of new research, new case studies, and updated Google algorithm coverage. Existing buyers can upgrade to v2 for $19.
